Asterisk (http://www.asterisk.org) is a full featured
PBX software that handles not only VoIP connectionS
but also (with the appropriate hardware) connections
to the normal wire-line PSTN systems or interfaces to
the Cellular network. It would be a good addition to
any MCU or other installation that was interested in
having a flexible telephone setup at low cost.
Stan mentions some really good advantages of VoIP. An
additional one is that the connection to the regular
fixed telephone system can be made not only through
the systems in the USA but also (even if only as a
redundant backup) through providers in other parts of
the world. We use a provider out of the UK in order
to get very low cost calls to Europe. (it would be
cheaper to use that same provider to call my parents
in Augusta than the rates from Bellsouth!!!!!)
