Hello fellow Amateur Radio Operators:
I have been ask by several Amateur Radio Operators in Georgia, Alabama, and
Florida if they should accede to the America Red Cross' request for a
background, criminal, credit, life-style check now required of all ARC
volunteers and conducted by MyBackGroundChecks.com. I have researched this
matter and
I recommended against this for the following reasons:
(1) MyBackGroundChecks.com does not have a sufficient privacy policy to
ensure the confidentiality of the information;
(2) The American Red Cross does not need (or in my estimation require) the
credit, life-style checks; and
(3) Once the ARC has been furnished the information, you do not know how it
will be safe-guarded or what will be done with the information.
However, if you support the ARC in other volunteer efforts, you may be
required under threat of termination if the information is not supplied and
the information gathered.
Calls to the ARC in Atlanta, produced only the admonition to contact the ARC
National Headquarters.
Remember that the HomeLand Security people only require a criminal
background check for volunteers.
