GAARES-P2P NET RESULTS & MAPPING FOR SUN 1-DEC-2024
A copy of this document in pdf format is attached to the [email protected] posting for your convenience and future reference.
Thanks to Ricky, NG4DX, for serving as NCS today and also to Murdock, W4JNR for backing him up as alternate. Murdock received one message on 80m this morning while Ricky was briefly off the air, all seamless and transparent to all participants. This illustrates why we use one callsign for NCS.
Participants should have all noticed today that their initial call to WG4PTP triggered a tone (like a carrier) for a couple seconds, then WG4PTP responded to you. This is because Ricky runs Winlink P2P with “Tuner Enhancement” checked in the Vara HF modem menu. I have mentioned this in training paragraphs and now you know how the connect process works with it. IF YOU DIDN’T HEAR IT TODAY, YOU DIDN’T HAVE YOUR SPEAKER AUDIO TURNED UP ON THE RIG, WHICH IS A NO-NO. YOU SHOULD BE MONITORING AUDIO ON THE FREQUENCY BEFORE INITIATING A CONNECT. This has been covered extensively the last few weeks both in the SET summary and in weekly net summaries.
Callsigns checking in today: 36 (plus NG4DX)
Check-in msgs – 80m: 27
Check-in msgs – 40m: 28
Total Check-in msgs: 55
1 message was addressed incorrectly to NCS WG4PTP rather than the tactical callsign GAARES-P2P.
60M CAPABILITY SURVEY:
25 of the 36 stations (69%) of the check-ins this week indicated that they had 60m capability. The NCSs will be discussing whether we want to proceed with a test or not. In state propagation on 60m would normally be very good in Georgia in the mornings but we have to consider how many stations would not be able to participate. We will be looking at a possible test. 60m Channel 3 is the normal channel for digital ops. Feel free to let us know what you think about its feasibility.
FUN QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Winlink uses Center Frequency terminology. The Dial Frequency is always ______ kHz _____the Center Frequency.
a. 1500, below
b. 1500, above
c. 1.500, below
d. 1.500, above
Answer C is correct
Dial frequency is always 1.5 kHz (1500 HZ) below the Center Frequency for USB ops. Winlink and most other digital operations (except RTTY) use USB. Hey, these quiz questions are open book. You could have used the Winlink Vara P2P Session Window to answer that by looking at the Cntr Freq and Dial Freq windows!
Answers reported in check-in messages today are below. If you sent more than one check-in msg, we counted your answer only once.
A 4
B 2
C 26 (79% of you answered correctly)
D 1
No answer 3

Next week’s net will be same time and same short check-in subject line. Later this week I will post the new Fun Question of the Week for that net. If/when we decide to do a trial 60m or 30m check-in, it will be in addition to the 80m and 40m check-in periods—a second operator taking test check-ins.
