GAARES-P2P NET RESULTS & MAPPING FOR SUN JAN 12, 2025
A copy of this document in pdf format is attached to the gaares.groups.io posting for your convenience.
We hope you are all recovering well from the storm a couple days ago and are getting back to normal, with minimal antenna / shack issues. Thanks to Ricky, NG4DX, for serving as the NCS today and Murdock, W4JNR for picking it up after Ricky had a computer problem. This occurred a few minutes before the switchover to 40m and Murdock took over. There was another hiccup for a few minutes at the switchover time to 40m. ND1J took the net briefly, then Murdock picked it up again. Murdock had lots of ice to contend with this morning. He had some antenna problems due to the thick ice that blanketed the mountain-top he lives on. Other than a couple of short delay with no NCS responding, people checking into the net were unaware of these NCS changes, the real advantage of using only one callsign.
In reviewing the summary below, recognize that the goal of this week’s check-in process was for stations to use manually entered coordinates for both the message header location and the position report. In addition, the report was to be correctly formatted, including comments.
NET SUMMARY:
Stations mapped this week include only the check-ins that were completely correct:
- The message header showed a location that was “Specified” (manually entered). If your message header did not contain a location or the location source was “Grid Square” or “GPS”, the message was not mapped.
- The Position Report message was correctly formatted, including the comment line that contained only the check-in sequence and nothing more.
Private feedback available: If you would like to get feedback on what, if anything, was wrong with your message, just email me directly to [email protected] and I will be happy to provide you details for your message(s) in a private email.

FUN QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
GAARES-P2P NET’s mission is to train the use of Vara HF Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Emcomm. What is P2P’s biggest advantage?
A. It is faster than using an RMS
B. It is more secure than RMS
C. It does not utilize internet
D. It allows messages to go through in weaker conditions than RMS transmissions
Answer A Incorrect: P2P and RMS are the same speed for a given bandwidth and propagation. Answer B Incorrect: There is no difference in security. As in all other transmissions over amateur radio frequencies, information is never secure.
Answer C is correct: P2P messaged does not require use of the internet, unlike sending Winlink messages via Telnet or RMS stations.
Answer D Incorrect: There is no difference between P2P vs RMS transmissions using the same bandwidth, when encountering weak signal conditions.
QUIZ RESULTS:
Answers reported in check-in messages today are below. If you sent more than one check-in msg, we counted your answer only once. If you gave different answers, we took the answer in your final message.
A 1
B 1
C 37 ( 92.5 %) EXCELLENT!
D 1
(No answer 2)
Total callsigns 42
Thanks for participating in today’s net. Remember, we are training for actual Emcomm situations and your devotion to training is commendable. Now, you should have a good working knowledge of how to manually enter a location in Winlink Express and know how to control if a message header will have location or not. Perhaps we will repeat this exercise in a few weeks to keep the subject matter fresh in mind.
The formatting for instructions for this week were redesigned. Please send me feedback if would prefer changes.
See you next week & 73,
David ND1J
