New participants: The GAARES-P2P Sunday net is a check-in Net. You may check in at any time during the Net by simply sending a check-in message. Check in on each of the bands if you want. Once you send a check in message, you are released.
This Sunday, 15-Dec, the net will be doing a TRIAL on 30m, in addition to the normal schedule used the past several weeks. All participants with 30m capability are welcome to check-in there as well as 80m and 40m. See schedule below. The training subject of the week is 30m.
FUN QUESTION OF THE WEEK: (The answer will be posted in the net summary within a day after the net.)
Please answer the question in your check-in message.
You are transmitting a simulated Emcomm message via P2P to a Net Control Station during an exercise and encounter extremely slow throughput. You should:
A. Consider aborting the connection so that others may connect
B. Press on and try to get the message through
C. Never abort in this situation because it’s the Target Station who should abort
D. None of the above
SUNDAY, 15-DEC IS SHORT MSG CHECK-IN:
CHECK-IN SUBJECT LINE: <yourcall>, <fname>, <county>,<band> (80m or 40m or 30m),<Question Answer – just the letter A B C or D >
Example: AB4QQ, Russell, Gwinnett, 30m, A B C or D
MESSAGE BODY: optional
REMINDERS – DO NOT CHECK “Request Message Receipt” for P2P operations
SESSION SCHEDULE:
TIME: SESSION: CENTER FREQ: DIAL FREQ: BANDWIDTH
0800-1000 ET 80m 3584.5 kHz 3583.0 500 Hz
1000-1400 ET 40m 7083.5 kHz 7082.0 500 Hz
0800-1400 ET 30m TRIAL 10119.0 kHz 10117.5 500 Hz
Net Control Station (NCS) WG4PTP
This week, Kory, W4RZ, will be conducting the net and Murdock, W4JNR will be the alternate.
A third operator will be conducting the 30m trial. In all cases, participants connect to WG4PTP.
Check-in messages MUST BE ADDRESSED to (Tactical Address): GAARES-P2P. (We have stressed this for months.)
QRM Reduction: If WG4PTP is not responding by 4th call, click abort and investigate.
TRAINING SUBJECT OF THE WEEK: 30m Review / Tutorial
The 30m band is reserved for CW / data, only. It is a narrow band, 10.100-10.150 MHz. No voice transmissions are allowed on the band and there is a 200w limit on RF power.
Thirty meters is a very popular band for RMS users. When choosing a frequency to operate on, avoid 10.140-10.150 as this is where most RMS stations reside. This 10 kHz area is where the FCC grants digital RMS station authorization to operate unattended (called Automatic Control). RMS stations operating wider than 500 Hz under automatic control must use this portion of the band.
Most operators will find that an 80m-10m multiband OCF will not tune 30m. Even a good antenna tuner will probably not like the OCF on 30m. A 160-10m OCF will tune marginally but not radiate well. The best option for 30m is a vertical or simple dipole. The dipole is easy to throw up – it’s only 15m on each leg and really doesn’t need to be very high. Since the band is only 50 kHz wide, a dipole and even a hamstick will be very low SWR over the entire band.
