GAARES-P2P NET SUMMARY FOR FEB 16, 2025 (pdf attached to this posting that is on gaares.groups.io)
Thanks to Kory W4RZ for backing me up as alternate NCS today. We hope everyone is safe after the brutal weather passed through nearly all of Georgia in the night and this morning. Hopefully, you also did not encounter any damage. SIX stations reported running on emerg/gen/batt power today due to commercial power outage. That included NCS.
NET SUMMARY:
All participants were mapped except for those using “Grid Square” location (which was contrary to net instructions). For those mapped, you can click on your station to see how your check-in message and location rated. If you would like to get feedback on specifics of your message, just email me directly to [email protected] and I will be happy to provide you details for your message(s) in a private email.
The EXTRA question this week was “Have you registered for the GAARES ANNUAL TRAINING MTG” at Forsyth GA, to be held SAT Mar 8? Remember, pre-registration is required to attend.

FUN QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
You initiate a call to NCS WG4PTP in order to check-in to the Net but you hear no answer – the station is not responding to your calls. How many times do you let your rig call before aborting the transmission?
A. Until the “Retries” setting is reached, as set in the session settings.
B. No more than 3 times.
C. Until WG4PTP finally answers
D. Until hell freezes over
ANSWERS:
We have been over this many times and yet, most every week, someone calls and calls and calls even though there is no answer. Today, I did not hear anyone doing that. Great! By the way, you stop calling by clicking Stop or Abort in the session, to the right of Start. Clicking Abort is the best way and fastest. IF you are already connected, the best way is to click Stop. It will take longer but it will also tell the other station you have hit stop so it will not keep calling when you disappear.
A. Incorrect – This is not the best answer when calling a P2P station. That setting can be anything you chose from 1 to 30 so if you have it set at more than 3, it is not correct.
B. Correct: The station being called will respond immediately, if it is available / not busy. Even with Vara “Tuner Enhancement” on at the station being called, you will immediately hear a tuning tone and then, on the third call, the station will respond directly to you with connect handshake
C. Incorrect: If the station isn’t answering right away, something is wrong
D. Incorrect and thanks for the couple of comments made. I think you all get the idea here.
QUIZ RESULTS:
Answers reported in check-in messages today are below. If you sent more than one check-in message, we counted your answer only once. If you submitted messages with different answers, we took the answer in your final message.
A 5
B 30 (83%)
C 0
D 1 ( I think he was just messing with us!)
Total callsigns that gave an answer: 36
Callsigns that did not give an answer: 2
Thanks to EVERYONE for participating. If you have any questions about P2P, please send them to me. I may be able to incorporate them into a weekly training session.
See you next week & 73,
